November 5, 2004 Inauguration Ceremony

Nancy Cantor was formally installed as the 11th Chancellor and President of Syracuse University in a ceremony Nov. 5 in the Carrier Dome on the SU campus. The Inauguration Ceremony was one part of a year of activities focused on the theme "University as Public Good: Exploring the Soul of Syracuse."

Following the ceremony, the Inauguration Symposium, “Universities and Moral Responsibility: Respecting Humanity at Home and Abroad,” was held in the Schine Student Center's Goldstein Auditorium. The symposium involved three distinguished panels of leading artists, journalists and social thinkers, including Central New York community leaders and SU faculty, focused on the topics of racism and genocide.

Highlights included a satellite address by CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour, a reading by renowned poet Martín Espada and a presentation by author Samantha Power, author of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning book "A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide."
